Submission Deadline: January 15th, 2025
The Empirical Studies of Conflict network (ESOC) will host its first ever research and policy conference in Asia, held from June 2 to June 4 at National Taiwan University (NTU) in Taipei. Research panels will be held on June 3rd and 4th; an optional opening reception in the evening will be the only formal activity on June 2nd.
The program chairs – Renard Sexton (Emory University) and Hans H. Tung (NTU) – welcome submissions on topics related to conflict, broadly defined, from political science, economics and adjacent disciplines. Although all submissions are welcome, papers presented at ESOC meetings tend to be quantitative in nature, with attention to causal inference and strong substantive knowledge of cases.
The topics for panels at recent ESOC meetings are wide ranging, including insurgency, peacekeeping, climate, migration, organized crime and nationalism. Provided a project includes a clear link to conflict or political violence, it is within the remit of this meeting. Although the meeting does not have a defined theme other than conflict, broadly define, the program chairs especially welcome papers that are focused on emerging security issues in Asia.
Please note that although submissions that include only an abstract will be reviewed and scored, authors that include full working drafts, or other evidence of concrete progress (e.g. slide deck, pre-analysis plan, partial draft, grant proposal) will receive additional points in the scoring process.
Submission Procedure: Please submit proposals via Google Form at the link here.
Notification of Acceptance: You will be notified by approximately February 15 if your paper is selected for presentation at the meeting in Taipei. Emory University and NTU will cover travel expenses for presenters; presenters are welcome from universities around the world. ESOC also has a strong norm of participation from non-presenters, including scholars and policymakers.
After Acceptance: Selected authors will be expected to submit a final paper by May 10 in time to give discussants time for their review.
