CALL FOR PAPERS
Submission Deadline: June 14, 2024
The Empirical Studies of Conflict Project (ESOC) is holding its Annual Meeting October 18-19, 2024 at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA
The Annual Meeting program chairs are Cesi Cruz, Darin Christensen, and Renard Sexton.
Rising political and economic tensions across the globe have led to widespread expressions of hate aimed at particular individuals and groups. These sentiments are found not only in political discourse and across social media platforms, but tragically go beyond speech to include actions that take the form of violent behavior and conflict. Understanding the mechanisms through which hate is socially transmitted and motivates violent behavior is an ongoing research challenge.
This year’s Annual Meeting of the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project will take as its theme “Hate and Conflict.” Papers are welcome that, inter alia, use new methodologies for tracking the sources and consequences of hate speech; examine contemporary drivers of ethnic and inter-group conflict, including climate change and migration; explore the continued salience of violent identity politics; and exploit experimental techniques aimed at countering hate speech and hate crimes. Papers that combine theory and empirics with actionable policy prescriptions are particularly welcome. However, papers on other topics will be given full consideration.
Please note that full working papers will be required as part of the paper submission process.
